My great grandfather, David Mercer was first postmaster of Matfield Green and got to name the town–he and his wife and 9 children had come to Kansas from Kent County England where they lived in Matfield-on-the-Green, a small village near Leeds Castle, about halfway from London to Dover’s coast. So now if anyone asks you about that unusual name “Matfield Green” you have the story of it’s origins.
    That David Mercer is also buried in the Matfield cemetery–a huge slab of limestone is over his grave.
